Without examining your packaging attempt, I can't say for sure where you
went wrong, but it looks like your build dir is set to
obj-$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE) yet makes no provision for making sure that
dir exists. Try building the version that's in Debian. It builds just
fine and makes the correct directory (obj-x86_64-linux-gnu on my system,
which is 64 bit).
