I agree, and I had started to think along these lines while looking at
what it would have taken to perform the db-upgrade with all the possible
(and impossible :) error conditions. I reverted to libdb4.2.

However, I'd still like to hear that someone other than me has made an
upgrade test before I upload to unstable. Currently, I know that nobody
on this list has even tried to install the thing, because the saslauthd
init script was broken in a visible way, and there were several other
problems that made the package unusable and IMO unsuitable even for
unstable in the current situation (aiming for fast migration to
testing).

So please everyone, install the old package (from testing or unstable)
on your test box, configure it to your liking (in several different ways
one after the other, if you can), upgrade to ~pre05 (uploaded to
experimental a few minutes ago) and then report on success or failure
for each test case you came up with. If you can't do anything else, then
at least install the experimental package and confirm that it installs
on your system.

As soon as there is some confirmation from some of you that we won't
totally break people's systems, I'll upload to unstable.
