I can't reproduce this here locally.
Works everything out of the box within a Gnome3 environment without some
AMD or NVidia graphic card. Just plain Intel inside GPU within the CPU.

As you don't have provided some information about the used hardware and
the used Desktop Environment it's quite difficult to start any analysis.
But I expect some issues probably related to the graphic card hardware
and their required drivers.

You have read already the information within
/usr/share/doc/kicad/README.Debian ?

You can try to narrow down the root for the issue by using strace to see
what system calls kicad is doing and what is potentially going wrong.

Especially if you call the shortcuts.
