Yes, I've just tried smex to test dh-make-elpa.

And another option would be not fail silently (and not fail with
ordinary error message), but rather report a kind of warning or some
message that some particular information cannot be extracted. In this
case it will not scare users of dh-make-elpa and will inform them about
problems.
