I didn't know whether "user IDs" were user names or the numbers in the 
/etc/passwd file.

I still think that should be mentioned in the documentation itself.

I assumed it was just an example file and that I had to copy lines from 
it to somewhere else.

Something like "uncomment the plain_saslauthd section" would be more 
clear I think.
