Disclaimer: Please don't understand this as a "rant".

The "right way" is the way that fits your needs.

There are several means of using exim together with SpamAssassin and
ClamAV, and _you_ have to choose the one that _you_ want to live with.

If you want your system to do the job only with exim, SpamAssassin and
ClamAV, this solution (scanning is done the smtp_data ACL) might be
the right one for you.

But it's you who has to decide...
