hm... I think actually downgrading matplotlib could help ;)

long story short... could you try my head (yoh/master) in git repository
-- I've pushed what I think would be a fix (and it included 1 other tiny
fix which is somewhat irrelevant ;) to this particular issue)

please share if it plots fine now
