[Pkg-fglrx-devel] Bug#653936: fglrx-glx: GLX not actually available after installation

Package: fglrx-glx
Version: 1:11-12-1

I installed the following packages:
firmware-linux-nonfree fglrx-control fglrx-control-qt3 fglrx-driver
fglrx-glx fglrx-source glx-alternative-fglrx libgl1-fglrx-glx
xserver-xorg-video-fglrx

Nevertheless, when I attempt to run any program which requires GLX (e.g.
glxgears) this message appears:
X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 136 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request: 12
Current serial number in output stream: 12

My system uses the Radeon (AMD) RS690M chipset.

I restarted X and then rebooted after the installation.

Output of uname -a:
Linux cf-gw 3.1.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Dec 11 20:36:41 UTC 2011 x86_64
GNU/Linux

I attempted to report this using reportbug but got no email response, so
I'm sending directly to submit, and I will attach the output of
reportbug -q --template -T none -s none -S normal -b --list-cc none -q

If I can supply any more information or be of any help please ask.

Note: as I was typing this, the screen became visibly corrupted, see two
screenshots here: http://www.panix.com/~carlf/files
