You're very welcome to join the Alioth project.

I'm personally focusing on open fonts right now but maybe others in the
team can help with co-maintaining these fonts. Any takers?

Actually, at this stage the font packaging best practises are still
forming... You can look at what is currently done in the svn repo.

Have you been in touch with upstream about re-releasing under a
community-recognized license like the OFL? Instead of his own license?

I would suggest you consider committing the existing packaging work in
our svn under packages/ttf-larabie-$whatever

Maybe more splitting of the packages would improve this aspect as well.
