So, I think two separate Debian bugs remain here. First, for
libfreetype6, I'd suggest disabling stem darkening as in the 2.6-2.1
packages above. Second, for fonts-cantarell, I would still suggest
shipping the fontconfig configuration that enables autohinting, to
improve the default/systemwide rendering; however, for that one, I would
understand if you didn't want to do so, and I can always enable that via
my own fontconfig.
