I have to say that I am astonished myself about the effect of this
switch. The stems are thin and crisp while still preserving the
individual shapes of the glyphs.

I'd even say that it's wrong not to disable [*] stem darkening as long
as the other parts of the rendering stack do not support this feature
properly, i.e. as long as they don't have implemented support for gamma
correction.

[*] That's a triple negation, so: Please disable stem darkening. ;)

Please understand that I don't want to deviate from upstream in this
regard anymore. After all, this is very much dependent on one's
individual perception and preference as well as the used hardware.
Furthermore, forcing Cantarell to auto-hinting would negate much of the
hinting work that has just been put into the font.

I think the problem lies in FreeType here, which enables a feature
(i.e. stem darkening) that the actual rendering libraries (e.g. cairo)
aren't able to cope with.
