I would always use "upstream" for the upstream sources, "master" for
the upstream branch plus debian packaging changes, and "pristine-tar".

I guess that's taken from the %(pkg) variable?

> gbp import-dsc package-name-version.dsc

Only if you want to import an existing debian packaging.

> gbp import-orig package-name-version.tar.xz

Only if you want to import a new upstream release.
