Thanks for the added details.

To clarify, I don't doubt that your experience is real.  Reason I 
suggested to restart between tests is that (as I understand it) caches 
can play tricks like this: "please draw font object 217" might point to 
a different object if the font gets replaced - with the resulting 
experience that "new font renders differently" when in fact it is "new 
font renders differently if some data tables from old font is still in 
cache".

...but concretely there seems to be a real issue with these fonts: The 
fonts shipped in fonts-noto-unhinted has identical font names as other 
Noto fonts which won't fare well.
