Sorry, this is wrong. There is a new program "/usr/bin/xdg-open" which has a manpage "/usr/share/man/man1/xdg-open.1.gz". There is no new program "/usr/bin/open" that would justify a manpage "/usr/share/man/man1/open.1.gz". Is there any program relying on a shell to call "open" when it wants to call "xdg-open"?

What you are say is that there's some package creating an alternative for "open" that has nothing to do with "open" but installs an alternative to "xdg-open" and that's ok. It's not.
