It looks like you never faced the problem of too heavy dependency.

About the cluttering of the archive I can only say "what?"

The supposition that "almost any Debian based server needs some X11
libs installed anyway" is the expression of ignorance. Some admins
don't want to install the game on a server as it might have some open
holes, while the server might not.

I guess you are looking at the problem backwards. The problem is for
server installs, it does not matter that the server is "only 700k",
the point is that I don't want the damn client on a server!

If you want people to run the Quake server on Debian, please make sure
you please the users. I, for one, don't welcome our new
dependecy-hungry-quake-server overlords! :)
