Yes, there are. The engine itself seems to be free (zlib license with 
additional clause that forbids relicensing), but...

1. The binaries distributed by the author are NOT built from the 
available source. They have different networking code, so you cannot 
connect to a server that uses the binaries with a client built from source.

2. Almost every texture, sound file etc. is released under different 
non-free license.

As far as I know there have been many attempts to package Cube, but all 
of them failed. If you decide to try anyway, keep in mind that so far 
nobody has managed to convince the author to cooperate. He is not really 
a free software guy...

Note that this is based on my experience with Cube. I have never looked 
at Sauerbraten.
