Are you sure? I've just updated (actually, copied, the German man page
translation was completely gone) the po file and saw that you removed
all "\-". I left one in (for purpose, though I am not 100% sure if it
is right) and now "msgfmt --statistics -o /dev/null " complains:

de.po:981:20: invalid control sequence
msgfmt: found 1 fatal error

I attached the de.po; if you like, I can submit it as a bug report as
well.
