As a search path? You're not allowed to install into it.

You can find a copy of the fhs
in /usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs/fhs-2.3.txt.gz .

It would be nice to search multiple paths if possible (although i'm not
sure how roms fit into /usr/local; under ./share?
