yeah, that's my idea, but I'm not sure it's ok, yet.

of course you are not. ;-)
That is just the base path for a mame/ hierarchy :-)

you can stack as many directories to the path(s) as you like;
this is what the entry in /etc/mame/mame.ini looks like in Ubuntu at present:

rompath                   $HOME/.mame/roms;/usr/local/share/games/mame/roms
