By strace-ing the game, I found that it wants to look up its data in 
/usr/share/alienarena instead of /usr/share/games/alien-arena.

It also supports ~/.config/alien-arena as a base data directory, thus it can 
be fixed by
$ cd ~/.config/alien-arena
$ ln -s /usr/share/games/alien-arena/botinfo/
$ ln -s /usr/share/games/alien-arena/data1/
