Yes it would mean we would have to wait for MESS

OTOH Mess follows quite closely Mame Developement ( it is mostly the
same devs ) For instance Mess 0.142 was released just one day after Mame
0.142, and they even have the same -u* developement cycle ( both are now
0.142-u3 )
