I am unable to reproduce this bug, please provide some more information:

Can you provide a screenshot of the everything being blue issue? If you
venture off the island then everything will be blue but the initial
position will be on top of the island.

Perhaps you misunderstood the planting mechanism? First you must define
an area of land that you will use as your garden using the white square
tool and then you will be able to plant within that garden. Please
follow the tutorial to understand the game better.

Which graphics card do you have and which driver are you using?
