Please note that I corrected this report. It turns out it is possible
to plant - in water. It is therefore just very hard to figure out
where to plant.

Please find attached a screenshot taken at the beginning of the game.
At this point, I have not moved my gardener or clicked anywhere or
done anything. So if the gardener is supposed to start on top of the
island, this should definitely demonstrate the problem since my
gardener appears to begin over water. This does actually show that I'm
over land but you will see why this was far from obvious to me. (I can
tell I'm over land because the option to pick up water is faded out.
This is how I eventually figured out a way to plant "in the water".)

No, I really do understand the planting mechanism and I have worked
through the tutorial at least twice. Indeed, I figured out a way to
plant but what I appear to be doing is planting in water. Nothing
looks like land. (And I certainly cannot distinguish light from dark
soil - just have to plant in the blue and hope.) I compared the
screenshot online and it is obvious from that screenshot where the
land is. That's not how it looks on my machine at all.

Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200
nouveau drivers (from testing)

If it would help, I could also take screenshots of plants growing in
water if that would help. But I'd have to move away from the starting
position to get them growing properly. (When everything looks like
water, finding water is just as difficult as finding land.)
