I should have explained: this can be reproduced by trying to restore the
saved-game file of a player who used a player name that is 6 characters
or longer. (assuming a 4-digit user ID, which is also part of the filename)

Specifically:
1) Run slashem 0.0.7E7F3-3 using the player name "Matthew"
2) Save the game
3) Upgrade to slashem 0.0.7E7F3-6
4) Run slashem and note that it does not restore your saved game.
(It starts a fresh game instead)

Alternatively:
1) Run slashem 0.0.7E7F3-6 using the player name "Matthew"
2) Save the game
3) ls /var/games/slashem/save
4) Note that the saved-game file for Matthew has been truncated
