it's just an optimized malloc implementation, which apparently worked well for us in the past. I would personally prefer to just use the glibc version (ptmalloc?) and work around any issues that may cause (if possible, don't know yet, really), or try to have them fixed in glibc.

I'm sure we could fix this, but I think you will agree with me that from a debian perspective we would like to prefer to use ptmalloc anyway, instead of the googly stuff..?
