Despite what is says in file:///usr/share/doc/imagemagick/www/command-line-options.html#depth
Even saying -depth twice,
$ convert -depth 1 irapws07.xcf -depth 1 -resize 850x1100 irapws07.png; xli irapws07.png
still reports
irapws07.png is a 850x1100 8 bit deep RGB PNG image with an alpha channel, background = #fefefe
