Typing in the command line (mini-commander) applet requires the panel to
be focused.  When it is focused you will see a blinking text-entry
cursor in the left side of the input text box like in any normal input
text box.  When the focus mode for metacity is in Mouse or Sloppy mode
and the mouse is placed over the applet or the text box is clicked, the
panel (and applet) does not receive focus - instead whichever
application that last had the focus remains focused.  You can see that
no text-entry cursor appears in the mini-commander applet.

If the focus mode is in Click, everything is fine, clicking on the panel
causes it to receive the focus, and you can type into the mini-commander
applet fine.
