In the meantime I found out that a change to some Gnome themes solves
the problem.
But still gliv is crashing with gdb mentioning
for example:

34 0x0f7104d8 in g_signal_emit_by_name () from
/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.so.0
(Although it's other files, too, gdb is mentioning sometimes --
This last crash happening after changing the theme to "Simple" and then
trying to run gliv)
"Simple" is part of
gnome-themes_2.4.1-1_all.deb

Themes from
gnome-themes-extras_0.4-1_all.deb
seem to work for gliv, whereas
gtk2-engines-cleanice_1.2.6-1_powerpc.deb does not.

All this just as a hint to what is going on ...

HTH
