I've finally caught that one. It has nothing to do with gnome-session,
but rather with desktop-base. I assume that, like me, you purged and
reinstalled desktop-base because of the dpkg-divert fsckage. But when
you do that, you remove
/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/desktop/gnome/background/%gconf.xml which
was a conffile in desktop-base until now. This was very bad, as this
file is also generated by libgnome2-common's postinst, and this is
corrected now, but it's not easy to fix the previous, broken version.
To solve the problem, just run
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libgnome2-common.postinst configure
Maybe kov will have an idea to fix desktop-base so that doesn't happen
upon upgrade.
