For information a note from the gedit 2.7.90 release note:

"yes, we know that there are still a lot of possible improvements,
especially the much requested ability of writing remote files through
gnome-vfs, unfortunately they require a fair bit of reworking of the
gedit's internals. Hopefully in 2.9..."
