Ok, this is what I find in ~/.xsession-errors:

** (gnome-panel:11365): WARNING **: Failed to load default panel
configuration. panel-default-setup.entries hasn't been installed using
gconftool-2 --load ?

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help debug is
further.
