Bug#285331: gnome-applets: mailcheck crashes when checking pop3 account

When I enter a gmx.de or web.de (german freemail providers) mail account, the mailcheck applet crashes itself and additionally the top-panel, where it is located. This issue has come up since upgrade to gnome 2.8 in Sarge, with gnome 2.6 everything had been fine.

Reproducible? Always

How to reproduce?
* Add the mailchecker applet to a gnome panel
* Enter the login data for a pop3 account
* Make the applet update the mail status, e.g. by pressing ctrl-U
=> The applet crashes
