You are running metacity alone ? I was thinking that metacity was not
usuable alone ... no menu, no icon ...

If you can run metacity alone yes ...

I think that 99.9% of the users run it with gnome. Are you really using
it without anything else to manage some menus, icons, panels or anything
?
