If you exec your window manager at the end of your .xinitrc, as so many
people do, and your window manager SEGVs, then X closes and kills all of
your running X clients, regardless of running state.

I'm pretty sure that potential for data loss gets a grave severity,
even if it doesn't affect every user.

You're relying on functionality of another package to mitigate the
severity of a metacity bug.  Not everyone is doing that; if metacity
ever Depends on (or Recommends or even Suggests) package gnome-session,
it might be justifiable.
