grr... sorry i got 2 different bugs mixed up!

the bug i thought i was replying to was that ALSA playback with gstreamer d=
oes
not work, fullstop. so just ignore that ALSA test.

yes, it always has worked with esd... the problem is that if i start up
rhythmbox, and then not play anything for a little while, the esd server wi=
ll
exit due to no activity... but an lsof still reveals rhythmbox using
  /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
  /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
since my esd backend is ALSA. it should be releasing these devices. this ma=
y be
a gstreamer bug.
