Following discussion on IRC with Sebastien, I am pasting which video card I
have, as it might be an xfree bug:
ATI 3D Rage Pro 215GP (iMac CRT built-in)
The ATI bug is mentioned at http://bugs.debian.org/xserver-xfree86 #223089,
#236187, #236373, #243436.
I've then tried playing back the same test files on my i686, which worked
(Matrox MGA-G200 AGP), so it appears to narrow it down to an xfree problem with
the ATI driver or to a PPC-specific problem.
