It does seem to be a dependency problem.

After trying a few others, here is the (obvious, in hindsight) upgrade that 
helped:

meise:~# apt-get install libvte-common

...

Preparing to replace libvte4 1:0.10.29-6 (using 
.../libvte4_1%3a0.11.11-3_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libvte4 ...
Preparing to replace libvte-common 1:0.10.29-6 (using 
.../libvte-common_1%3a0.11.11-3_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement libvte-common ...
Setting up libvte-common (0.11.11-3) ...
Setting up libvte4 (0.11.11-3) ...
