I've tracked this problem down.
It seems that each version of gqview creates a new
~/.gqview/qgviewrc file if one doesn't exist.

The problem here was that the earlier version which
used gimp-remote-1.3 created the file which the new
version then used.

Thus the solution is to remove or update ~/.gqview/qgviewrc

How to handle this automatically is a different question.
