Use the double-middle-click feature, then.

You cannot make all parameters user-configurable. Otherwise, the
configuration interface is completely cluttered and users are lost.

This particular preference was added in nautilus 2.8, but IMHO this is
another step in the wrong direction, as the nautilus preferences box is
already cluttered.
