There used to be some upgrade scripts, but:
1) they didn't work very well;
2) they were designed for GNOME 2.2, with GNOME 2.8 they're even worse;
3) there are several GNOME 1.4 features GNOME 2.8 is lacking;
4) there are many GNOME 2.8 features that'll be missing if you simply
try to match GNOME 1.4's environment.

If you really feel you need these upgrade scripts, feel free to improve
them to a usable state.
