Bug#367509: gnome-panel: Clock applet has changed, and takes up too much real estate

In gnome-panel up thru 2.12.3-1, I could configure the Clock applet
to display the "date" sitting on top of the "time", thus saving
space on the panel.

Now in gnome-panel the date & time are side-by-side, and there is
no way in Preferences to change that.  I'm pretty sure that there
used to be a check box in Preferences for this.

This is important to me, since I put a lot of stuff in my panel.

(Is this part of the GNOME goal of "simplification"?)
