Ok, now I understand what happened.
The plan with the new Gtk was to avoid using
/etc/gtk-2.0/gdk-pixbuf.loaders at all, so I simply stopped updating it
and planned removing it when all modules would have been converted to
the new dh_gtkmodules usage. However, I did not remove that file on
upgrades, and continued supporting the update-* commands. Hence, you
and others kepts an old file in /etc which still references the 2.4.0
modules...
I will probably change Gtk to remove the file, and the update-* script
to do ... nothing.
For now, you may either run the update-* commands on your system as you
did, or remove the /etc/ files altogether.
