I've made a couple of tests using "us,us" for layout.

The keyboard layout switcher applet and gnome-screensaver-dialog work.

From libgnomekbd-2.18.0/test:
$ ./gkbd-config-registry-client.sh
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.gnome.GkbdConfigRegistry was not provided by any .service files

$ ./gkbd-indicator-test

(lt-gkbd-indicator-test:5612): GnomeKbdIndicator-WARNING **: Woops
remote method failed: The name org.gnome.GkbdConfigRegistry was not
provided by any .service files

However, the indicator window appears.

Now, If I manually start the gkbd-config-registry-server, everything
works even with the original layouts, including
gkbd-config-registry-client.sh and the warning in gkbd-indicator-test
disappears.

So it appears that for some layouts, things work even if the dbus
service is not running, while for other layouts the service is required.

Or, things are supposed to work without the service, but my layouts
seem to crash them. Unfortunately I can't get useful traceback, yet.
