Thanks for your report. Which exact command / menu option are you using?
Is it the "new login" icon? Does it also happen with "new login in a
nested window" icon?

When the screen is garbled, can you switch to other virtual consoles
with control-alt-F1 to control-alt-F8?

As it is probably the root of the issue: which X driver are you using?
