I came to this bugreport because I wanted to file the same whishlist
bug.

Your answer is a surprise for me -- I've built a gnome-free version
(by taking the Debian package and doing some simple changes on the
Build-Depends and the ./configure switches), and I don't see any
problems.

Probably there's some functionality missing but hey, it's the user's
choice if they need it or not. Or maybe I don't see which important
features I'm missing.

ATM I fail to see the problem with adding an additional binary
package that does not depend on gnome; therefore I'd like to ask
again for including such a package.
