You mean, like gnome-core ?

Sorry, but I fail to understand what these tons of metapackages would
actually bring. There are things like package managers to install
packages that are available, whether you need a browser, a video player
or a spreadsheet.

But for now, the GNOME video player is totem, the GNOME mailer is
evolution, the GNOME browser is epiphany, the GNOME music player is
rhythmbox, the GNOME spreadsheet is gnumeric, and the GNOME CD burner is
nautilus-cd-burner. They are not just a random selection of packages;
they are designed to work together.

The metapackages are here so that a user can easily install a complete,
*integrated* desktop environment with what we think is the best user
experience. They are not written in stone once installed. If instead,
you choose to install a random selection of packages for which the only
common point is using GTK+, that’s your call.
