Hi,

From the gnome-screensaver changelog:

	Add gdk port of popsquares saver that uses the
	desktop theme and doesn't support configuration.

So the popsquares in g-s is actually a different hack from the one in
xscreensaver. 

Your suggestion above sounds like a good idea.
