My XDG_DATA_DIRS lacks the gnome path

~$ echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/:/usr/share/gdm/

In my case .dmrc =,

	[Desktop]
	Session=default

The default session is GNOME, for me at least. Unlike Neil I do log out and in
and restart my session frequently.
