Bug#521816: network-manager-gnome: NM shows confusing icon when cable is plugged

The symlinks between the gnome network icons and the nm icons are
created by icon-naming-utils:
<icon name="network-idle">
<link>gnome-netstatus-idle</link>
<link>nm-adhoc</link>
<link>nm-device-wired</link>
<link>nm-device-wireless</link>
<link>connect_established</link>
</icon>
Perhaps this is where the bug needs to be resolved?
