Bug#583574: gnome-panel regularly produces 100% CPU load

I have two machines - one with Intel GPU - X3100 and one with ATI
Radeon 4870. The problem only occurs on the Intel graphics. I have
enabled compositing manager in metacity (through gconf-editor) and in
my case the freeze of gnome-panel happens when I launch an application
from the panel and its animation don't finish - the big icon of the
application stays visible (see attached image frozen.png, lower right
corner). When I launch the calculator its enlarged icon do not stay
visible though (but the panel is still frozen) - maybe this is related
to the launch of gksu. Attached image of the frozen panel without
compositing(frozen_no_compositing.png).
